Studio Presentation – Civil Disobedience With Deployable Tensegrity Bamboo Structures

12.10.22 Events

Our very own Kim Sparks gave an excellent presentation on bamboo structures and the thought process behind creating something reusable, multi-functional and beautiful.

These bamboo tensegrity structures were dreamed up as a response to the climate emergency. They were originally designed to serve as blockades to Rupert Murdoch’s printing presses because his papers have failed to report on the climate crisis. Protesters erected the beacons and then climbed onto them.

Designed by a small team of engineers, architects and artists, they have also served as art installations to promote awareness of the crisis. Kim’s group entered and won the Antepavilion competition at Hoxton Docks last year.

This year, they were invited to erect a large structure at Glastonbury, which sat in the Shangri-La site for the duration of the festival.
